Mimic Moves

For this exercise you will be performing just a few hard moves at a time. Yep, that’s it.

Option 1: Make up moves on a spray wall that are similar to your outdoor projects (preferred)

Option 2: Use crux moves on board projects

For option 1, you will need a spray wall or densely set climbing wall. Try to match the steepness, holds and movement to moves on your projects. For each subsequent rep of a move, or subsequent session, adjust the footholds, target hold, size of the move, or size of the holds.

Always perform several variations of the movement. It’s not that important to make the move match your target move perfectly. Getting a bunch of “kinda similar” practice is effective for learning moves.

You can include 1-2 foot movements before and after the main hand movement if you want, such as sticking a jump move, and swinging your feet back in.

Rest as much as needed in between attempts until you reach the intended number of repetitions or time. This is a maximum strength exercise. You should not feel pumped or out of breath.

Focus:

Try to make the moves as similar to projects you want to do as you can, but don’t stress out about getting it perfect. Aim for quality over intensity, but it should still be hard.

Combination:

Perform at the beginning of your session, after warming up fully and doing any positional strength training. Might not be ideal to combine with finger training depending on the moves you select. This is a limit session.
