Low Gear Traverse

Problem selection:

For this drill, you will traverse back and forth at the bottom of a steep board or wall.

This is an all feet drill. Use all handholds and make small hand moves. Keep your feet on the kicker of the board and move back and forth. The goal is to develop capacity to move with control at this angle.

With some boards, it may be easier to climb slightly higher (above the kicker) where the bigger handholds can be used as feet.

Choose the handholds you’ll use ahead of time to reduce snatchy, unpredictable movements. It’s OK if you fall off. Try to pick a line of holds that you can execute smoothly for each rep, even if you have to do the same holds for each rep at first.

Climbing:

Move deliberately and slowly. No cutting loose, jumping or thrutchy movements. Rest between reps until recovered, at least 2-3 minutes.

This is not an endurance exercise, so you should not feel pumped, out of breath, or tired before starting the next rep.

Focus:

We are looking for time under tension here, not power. No snatching, jumping, thrutching. Keep your feet on!

Combination:

This is a general session and can be combined with any session. Perform after warming up and before any conditioning.
