Eye Contact

Problem selection & preparation:

This is a simple drill that can be done on any route or boulder.

Climbing:

During this drill, you will maintain eye contact with the foothold/handhold you are about to place your hand/foot on, until you are done grabbing that hold. Make sure you do not look away and then make extra adjustments to your grip or foot placement.

The goal is to make the process of hand/foot placement as deliberate as possible. While sometimes in climbing we do need to make purely tactile decisions, we should always look at what we’re doing when we can.
Optional variation/progression: include changes in your gaze in your visualization/sequence: e.g. I look down at the chip foot, I place my left foot on it. I look up at the large pinch feature, I move my left hand to the bottom of that feature. I look down at the tufa I will heel hook with my right foot. etc.
Combination:This is a general session and can be combined with any climbing sessions. Perform at any time.
